1988 In the Fall of 1997 several players from UCSD and SDSU joined together on a team called the “Has-Beens” and entered the local Peninsula Soccer League. Largely uncoached (and some would say uncoachable) the Has-Beens won the league championship.

1990 Now sponsored by prestigious local soccer club Surf, the team entered several tournaments in addition to Peninsula League play.

1996 The team was named Co-Champions of the Las Vegas Silver Mug tournament with present-day WPSL rival Sacramento Storm.

1997 After earning a sponsor, the team became known as “Auto Trader Women’s Select,” and it was invited to tour Europe to face clubs in Germany, Hungary, and Italy. The team was 4-0 overseas.
1998 Following the success in Europe, the team held open tryouts and became a charter member of the new U.S. Women’s Premier Soccer League, finishing second.

1999 More international travel, this time to Mexico City to play two games against the Mexican Women’s National Team to prepare for the 1999 Women’s World Cup. The team then went to Las Vegas where it won the Silver Mug Tournament with an 8-0 record, allowing only 1 goal. Advanced through the National Cup where we defeated Las Virgines and the So Cal Blues for the State title, then pounded New Jersey’s Patrick Real Wykoff 4-0 in July to win the National Cup Championship. Capped-off the year by claiming 2nd place in the WPSL.

2000 After changing its name to “San Diego WFC,” the team followed up its 1999 Silver Mug and National Cup championships with an Arizona Copper Cup Championship and its first WPSL National Championship!

2001 San Diego WFC becomes a sponsored team of the WUSA’s San Diego Spirit. Won the Las Vegas Silver Mug title and takes second place in the WPSL despite losing several players to the Spirit.

2002 San Diego WFC is named an affiliate of the WUSA’s Spirit, and scrimmages the U.S. Under-16, Under-19, and Under-21 National Teams.

2004 San Diego WFC signs several former WUSA stars including Mandy Clemens (San Jose CyberRays), Melissa Moore (Philadelphia Charge), and Allie Sullivan (S.D. Spirit). Also becomes a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization whose mission is to promote soccer coaching and playing opportunities for females of all ages.
