SeaLions Wipe Out West Coast in Season Opener
Saturday May 23, 2009

The San Diego SeaLions opened their 2009 WPSL campaign with a 3-1 win over the visiting West Coast FC at Manchester Stadium on the campus of Cathedral Catholic High School on Saturday night.

Tessa Lennala (UC Riverside) earned the first goal of the night for the SeaLions in the 23rd minute.  They rounded out the first half with a goal by Giuliana Longmire (USD) with only seconds remaining.

Michelle Spacciapolli (Pepperdine) drove in the SeaLions' third goal in the 60th minute, off an assist from Leah Anderson (Western Washington University). Goalkeepers Darcy Fant (UCSD) and Lu Snyder (SDSU) maintained a 3-0 lead until a shot by West Coast Striker Jaime Schiffer (Boston University) just made it past the gloves of Snyder.

"The ladies played great tonight," said SeaLions Director of Operations, Scott Dreher. "They kept pressure on the ball which allowed for quick play. They didn't let up throughout the game, even with the lead. They showed confidence and played smart."

The SeaLions hit the road on Saturday, May 30th to try and earn three points away versus the Claremont Stars. They return home to Manchester Stadium on Sunday, May 31st to battle the Los Angeles Rampage. Special guest appearance by former Women's US National Team member, Shannon MacMillan. Kick off is at 6:00 PM.
