SeaLion CoCo Goodson Drafted to WPS

January 14, 2012

23 players were selected in the 2012 Women's Professional Soccer Draft, held in Kansas City, Missouri on Friday. Chosen 12th overall, and the fifth pick of the second round was San Diego's own CoCo Goodon.

Goodson was selected by the Philadelphia Independence, a club that has made appearances in the WPS Championship twice in its two years of operation under Head Coach Paul Riley.

"The San Diego SeaLions could not be more proud of CoCo," said SeaLion GM Amie Becker. "She has made huge strides in her soccer career with UC Irvine under Head Coach Scott Juniper, and has been an impact player for the SeaLions and Coach Jen Lalor-Nielsen over the past two seasons. This is a great testament to all of her hard work. She will be missed in San Diego, but we are delighted that she has been given the opportunity to play for Coach Riley and the Independence."

Goodson becomes the second Anteater to be selected in the WPS Draft joining Tanya Taylor who went in the fourth round, 24th overall, to the Boston Breakers in 2010.

A two-time All American, Goodson accumulated 12 goals, five game-winners, and five assists in her two seasons at UCI, and was part of consecutive Big West regular season champions and NCAA Tournament runs, both firsts for the Anteaters.

"This was an amazing opportunity and I'm glad that I was able to enjoy it," said Goodson. "I know that (Riley) is amazing.  He's one of the best coaches that there is in WPS. I've heard that it's a family atmosphere. I'm very excited to join that family."
