First Place SeaLions Get 4th Straight Conference Win

June 19, 2012

The San Diego SeaLions earned their fourth straight conference win at home Sunday night against LA Vikings to retain a perfect 4-0 record in the Pacific-South Division of the WPSL.

The SeaLions got on the board fast, tallying their first goal in the 3rd minute. Midfielder Judy Christopher played a ball to Shelby Murphy, who beat the Vikings’ keeper and buried it into the back of the net. Eight minutes later, Murphy crossed a ball in from the left side to a wide open Rosie Tantillo, who volleyed it into the net with the inside of her right foot. Before the end of the first half, Murphy tallied her second goal of the night off of a ball slotted through by Rachael Sloan, which she hit first time for the finish.

In the 53rd minute, Judy Christopher connected with Micaela Cervantes, who hit the ball from 25 yards out and sent it over the Vikings’ keeper’s head for goal number four. With a minute remaining, Maddie Tantillo fired a shot from 25 yards out that sailed passed the diving Vikings’ goalie and inside the far post, making it a 5-0 win for San Diego.

“The team took care of business today,” said SeaLions’ General Manager Amie Becker. “We have a perfect record, and we’re just a couple of games away from earning a playoff berth. The girls are focused, and we are ready to make San Diego proud.”

The SeaLions move to 4-0-0 on the season, while LA Vikings drop to 0-4-0. The SeaLions travel to Palos Verdes on Saturday, June 23 for their second match against Ajax. In the first meeting between the two teams, the SeaLions beat Ajax 5-1. The SeaLions return home to Cathedral Catholic High on July 8 to take on Beach FC at 2:00PM.
