3 Wins and an award for SeaLions in NCAA Competition

University of San Diego’s women's soccer team opened its 2012 season with a 6-1 victory over Central Washington at home on Friday.
UCSD sophomore and SeaLions’ midfielder Cassie Callahan scored back-to-back goals in the game. The first, a header off a free kick from Hayley Johnson, came at the 60:14 mark. Just over a minute later, Callahan buried a cross from senior midfielder Alexa Enlow for her second goal of the night, and her fifth career goal.
UC San Diego will host San Francisco State on Friday, Sept. 7 at 7 p.m. This will be the Tritons’ CCAA season opener. On Sunday, the action continues as UCSD plays host to Cal Poly Pomona. Kick off is set for 2:30 p.m.
San Diego State defender/midfielder and SeaLions’ defender Tiffany Hurst was named the Mountain West Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Monday afternoon. This is the second time the redshirt senior has been the recipient of the award.
Hurst helped guide SDSU to a 1-0 victory over Pepperdine at the SDSU Sports Deck on Friday. Her defensive play helped limit the Waves to just three shots, as the Aztecs earned their fifth consecutive shutout on the season.
San Diego State returns to action on Friday, Sept. 7 when it travels to the Minnesota Gold Classic. The Aztecs will play Minnesota on Friday, and then face off with Iowa State on Sunday, Sept. 9. Both contests will be held at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
LIU Brooklyn women's soccer team, home to SeaLions’ midfielder Alana Wohlers, earned a 1-0 victory over UMBC at LIU Field in its home opener on Sunday. The Blackbirds outshot the Retrievers, 12-2, including a 7-0 margin in the first half and did not allow the visitors a shot on goal.
LIU continues its 2012 campaign on Friday, Sept. 7 at the Black Knight Classic, hosted by Army. The Blackbirds will take on Syracuse on the first day of competition at 3:00 p.m.
