SEALIONS HIRE NEW COACH AND G.M.!
Monday Jan 05, 2009
San Diego -- The San Diego WFC SeaLions (WPSL) announce the hiring of Paul Dougherty as their new head coach, and Amie Becker as the team's first full-time General Manager.

"These are great hires for the SeaLions," said Lu Snyder, SDWFC President. "Paul Dougherty excels at bringing the most out of each player, and his teams have a history of over-achieving.  He's ideally suited to bring the SeaLions to the next level - a WPSL championship."

Paul DoughertyDougherty played professional soccer for 19 years, including stints in the English Premier League, Major League Soccer, Major Indoor Soccer League, and Continental Indoor Soccer League.  A former San Diego Sockers standout, League MVP and fan favorite, Dougherty spent 3 seasons as a coach with the La Jolla Nomads Soccer Club, where his teams won 2 Surf Cup titles along with State Cup, Regional and U.S. Club Soccer National Championships.  He also coached with Carmel Valley Manchester Soccer Club where his teams were known for their grit, toughness and "never quit" attitude.  Dougherty currently coaches at Rancho Santa Fe Attack Soccer Club, and holds a USSF "A" Coaching License.

Amie Becker graduated from New York University in 1998. She served as an account executive with the WUSA-San Diego Spirit in 2002-2003 before joining the San Diego Sockers (MISL) as Director of Operations, where she was responsible for the management, planning and production of the team's home matches.  In both positions her duties included developing partnerships involving the team and San Diego's youth soccer clubs.  In 2006 she worked with Soccer United Marketing in sponsorship fulfillment for the Mexican National Team matches held in the United States. Becker also worked with US Soccer where she handled the coordination and logistics of Youth National Team domestic and International training camps and matches. She has coached high-school soccer and plays in local indoor and outdoor leagues.

Amie Becker"Each year we strive to become a more professionally-run operation," added Snyder.  "Amie Becker's experience with US Soccer and WUSA brings us the business knowledge we need to keep pace with our on-field progress. The ultimate goal is to put the SeaLions in a position to add a professional WPS franchise should the opportunity arise."

The SeaLions will begin practicing for the 2009 season in late February; matches begin in May.  All SeaLion home games are played at Manchester Stadium, on the campus of Cathedral Catholic High School.
